December 2013

I know I’ve been away awhile.  Just a lot going on here that has kept my “quiet time” to a minimum.  I will say thank you for the birthday wishes, as well as the Thanksgiving well wishes and the Christmas cards.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all and I long for the day that I can return to you.  And now more about what I learned in the summer of 1993……….

I learned to excel in competition.  Now, growing up with3 brothers, this is something I was already familiar with.  However, I had never experienced the “friendly” wager until I went golfing with Matt D. and Matt M.  Golf was still a fairly new sport for me, but I was a natural.  And an invitation to a par 3 course with my new summer buddies was too good to pass up.   On one particular hole, the challenge was laid out.  Closest to the pin wins.  We all ended up within about 3’ to the pin on this 100 yd-ish hole, which was great.  But I went last and mine was inside 1’ and the clear winner.  I didn’t “win” anything, but I sure wore a smile the rest of the day.

I learned not to believe everything you hear.  When your Aunt tells you that the little door on the front of the Chick-fil-A was to be used only by the “Little People” that owned it.  Now, I’m still not sure what that little door on the Fayetteville, GA Chick-fil-A is really for, but I don’t think that’s it.

I learned that you could ride an inner-tube down a river with family & friends and have the time of your life. This is something I have continued to enjoy doing from time to time.

I learned that if you’re told to “get out of the house before the realtor shows up with interested home buyers” can be loosely translated to mean “if it’s hot outside, it is perfectly acceptable to hide under the master bed while the house is being shown”.  Corrie & I weren’t sure if this translation was acceptable, but we were willing to find out.  It does work btw.

I attempted to learn whether or not fancy dives while swimming, such as gainers & flying squirrels were the best ways to impress “the ladies”.  I can’t answer that.  I can say, however, that mid-air failures to attempt such dives that result in flops, both back & belly, did not seem to impress them in the least.  More to come.
