I was once
in a hush-puppy eating contest at Catfish Cabin with 2 other guys and I
won. I have always loved the slaw and
hush-puppy appetizer (or side) at Catfish Cabin. And one night I bragged to my buddies,
Joelseph & MacDiesel, that I could eat 100… easy! I mean, they’re small, I’m big, it would
work, let’s do this. Well after a few
weeks of trash talk & some more input from others, it was time to stop the
talk and start the walk. It was decided
that it needed to be a timed event rather than a numbered goal. And somewhere along the way I picked up some
competitors, Shea & Will. Someone
had called ahead & Catfish Cabin was on board. They were happy to have us & would
accommodate in any way. It was, I
believe, a birthday gathering for someone & there were probably 25 – 30 of
us in our group that night. We were
placed in the big room to the right as you go in and they had set us up at the
“head table” in front of everyone else.
They provided us with drinks & slaw & any condiment we wanted or
thought we might need. I think we were
planning on eating for an hour. It
didn’t take that long for us to pop. I
think we stopped after 30 minutes; it may have even been at 20. But the pace had slowed after 10
minutes. Turns out the putting 57 lbs of
bread & grease in your stomach doesn’t take an hour after all... I know it wasn’t that much but it felt like
more than that. I think we all ended up
in the high 40 s when we finally stopped.
And you can probably guess where we ended after that. I didn’t even get
close to that 100 mark I was shooting for, not even halfway, which is about as
close to that window Joelseph would get to if he jumped off that tin roof. Another story for another day. I have not had a hush-puppy since that night
though. I could probably eat one now if
I had it.

Christmas 2012
Prayers
going out to the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting rampage. Hard to watch.
I have been
over-whelmed lately with holiday cards & letters. Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to
think of me. I couldn’t possibly reply
to them all, but please know that they each meant very much to me. I miss you all & your kind words &
prayers make time seem to fly.
The only
“Christmas” song I liked up until 2 years ago was Willie Nelson singing “Pretty
Paper”. It was on an 8-track we had when
I was a kid and I always loved it.
Although I extended my Christmas song collection a few years ago by
about 30 songs, that one remains one of my favorites.
The card
from Nathan & Laney today just made my year. I sure do love them & MISS THEM TOO! Lol.
Got to see
Roy & Momma during a visit and then Rob & Daddy during another visit
for Christmas. It’s strange how time
flies by. All the Christmas’s we’ve
spent together, the memories, the meals, the laughs. I’m really fortunate to have family. Family that loves, family that cares. One of these Christmases though I will be
home. And when I get home I’ll be ready
for the traditional “sausage balls, shrimp cocktail, pigs-n-a-blanket, plus whatever
I make” Christmas. Can’t freakin wait!
I’m thinking
about making a “my top ten movies” list.
Just as a time killing exercise.
My list already has more than 10 movies on it, but I think I should just
compile the list then try to narrow it down.
I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Mid December 2012
12-12-12
I guess at
twelve minutes and twelve seconds past noon today there will be a magical
moment that will not happen again for one thousand years. Well, by my calculations that’s about the
time I hit my funny bone while sitting down to play a game of chess. And if it’s a thousand more years before that
happens again, I think I’ll be okay with it.
The concert
on AMC tonight was very good. The Who,
The Stones, Eric Clapton, and many more.
I didn’t know it was on AMC, and had looked for it on the major networks
earlier, but now I’m glad I’m a big channel surfer.
12-13-12
Got moved
this morning. My cellie went to the hole
for 15 days and rather than wait to see who I would get stuck with, I put in a request to move in with another
young white male who is quiet and knows how to be respectful. Plus it’s on the top tier so maybe it will be
warmer. Wish me luck.
12-14-13
It is
warmer. And I can even see the road
& the parking lot from my window.
Much better than the view I’ve had which was the neighboring pod. Moving on up.
Here we
are. Merely a week away from the end of
the Mayan calendar. Some say it will be
the end of the world. I say, if the
Mayans were so good at determining the end of the world, how come there aren’t
any Mayans still around? But today we
should still listen to the song “End of the World” by REM. I don’t remember the album, but I do know
that IF “It’s the end of the world as we know
it,” Then “and I feel
fine!” At least I feel better than the
Mayans.
12-16-12
12-16-12
We got to
see “The Watch” today. That was not at
all what I expected it to be, but it was funny.
Good movie.
I’m too good
at my job. I can only have 10 books out
at any given time and if they’re all checked out, there’s really not much I can
do. Sigh! Why do I have to be such a good librarian?
12-18-12
I get a lot
of requests for the Wheel of Time book series by Robert Jordan. Are they good? It doesn’t look like something I would care
about reading at all. I guess if I’m
asked about them they must be good, or interesting. But I can’t seem to get the drive to even
attempt to start on them. Maybe it’s
because I don’t want to put that much effort into it. That’s a big commitment. 13 or so books. Maybe one day I suppose. But not today.
All is right
in the world. I say today that my
beloved Blue Devils have once again risen to the top. And this time it was with some big wins. Wish I had my Duke hoodie!
